Artist - Kerry Souter
Kerry Souter’s abstract paintings are intuitive, ethereal, multi-layered artworks with a strong focus on texture and collage.
Graduating from Gray’s School of Art, Aberdeen with a BA(Hons) degree in Textile Design and Surface Decoration in 1992, Kerry’s background in textiles developed in a fine art direction over the years as she began to experiment with paint and mixed media. She started painting and exhibiting professionally as an artist in 2020.
Her love of textiles continues to influence her current work and her studio in Ayr is close to the beach which provides her other main source of inspiration.
Gathering memories and found objects relating to a place or moment in time, Kerry’s work is an exploration of her personal connections and emotions linked with the coastal landscape of Scotland. She aims to create complex areas of intimate detail within expressive, abstract landscapes that combine rich textures and organic pattern found in nature.
She uses acrylics and mixed media, usually working in a series of paintings. These paintings are completed over a period of several weeks or months, depending on their size, as she slowly builds layers of texture, semi-transparent glazes and collage, adding and subtracting with each application to create depth and history in each piece.
Kerry is a member of Open Studios Ayrshire, Visual Arts Association and Connected Artist Club. Her work has been exhibited around the U.K. and can be found in private collections in the U.K. and U.S.A.
